2020 Honda CR-V vs 2020 Toyota RAV4

2020 Honda CR-V vs 2020 Toyota RAV4

You have quite a bit of homework to do if you are looking for a sport utility vehicle. The compact SUV segment has no shortage of options, but the 2020 Honda CR-V and 2020 Toyota RAV4 are Canada's biggest and best-selling rivals in their class.

The rivalry dates back more than 20 years, as these two small SUVs were among the creators of what has become the most popular vehicle segment in the country. Although they have evolved similarly over the years, they have recently taken different paths to reach the top.

The Honda CR-V is powered by a 1.5-litre turbocharged, 4-cylinder engine that delivers a generous 190 horsepower and 179 lb-ft of torque. The Toyota is powered by a 2.5-litre, 4-cylinder engine that produces 203 horsepower and 184 lb-ft. of torque. All-wheel drive is available on both vehicles. The Honda transmission is a continuously variable transmission (CVT) with regular operation while the Toyota relies on a conventional 8-speed automatic transmission. In total, the average combined fuel consumption is 8.1 L/100 km for the CR-V and 8.2 L/100 km for the RAV4, with the optional all-wheel-drive system.

What does that mean exactly? Well, the Toyota RAV4 has more power on paper, but the CR-V is a little faster because it delivers its torque sooner thanks to the turbo engine. It is also a little more fuel-efficient.

The 2020 Honda CR-V also offers a larger list of safety equipment at no additional cost. Standard on all 2020 Honda CR-Vs is Adaptive Cruise Control, Collision Mitigation with Braking, Lane Keeping Assist and much more. The RAV4 offers some of these features but the Honda’s are more advanced.

When it comes to technology, the two compact SUVs offer standard 7-inch screens, Apple CarPlay, Android Auto and many other infotainment accessories.

The CR-V offers more space than the standard Toyota RAV4 with 1,110 litres of cargo space. It's more than any compact SUV too. In other words, the CR-V feels faster, is more efficient, and has more cargo space.
